Tar Heels Find Balance With Kendall Marshall At Point Guard

Feb 27, 2011 4:14 PM

The Tarheels have won nine of their last ten games since Kendall Marshall took over the starting point guard job.

Marshall, who is second in the ACC with 5.1 assists per game, has become an extension of Tar Heels coach Roy Williams on the floor.

"He understands time and score better than most people," Williams said. "He understands who's hot and who's not; he understands who's in foul trouble on the other team. He's a thinking man's point guard, with a lot of ability, too."

Not since Ed Cota has UNC boasted a point guard who looks to distribute so much more often than taking his own shot

Zeller?s Consistency Keys Tar Heels

Feb 23, 2011 10:16 AM

Junior big man Tyler Zeller leads the Tar Heels in scoring with 14.5 points per game, ranks ninth in the and rebounding (7.3), and is second in field-goal percentage (.534).

"He's been that little security blanket that every team needs, that you feel like you're going to get good effort from him every night. You feel like you're going to get intelligent play from him every night," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said. "... He's been having a very solid, very consistent year, and it's been very important to our team, to say the least."

Added NC State coach Sidney Lowe: "What stands out to me with Zeller is the way he approaches the game. His ability to run the floor, his size, his aggressiveness are all positives for them. When I watch him, I can tell there's no messing around. You can tell by his facial expression that he's coming after it, and he's going to get it. When there's a play that needs to be made, he just seems to be there. It's just part of his make-up, and part of the way he is."

Duke Rallies To Defeat North Carolina

Feb 10, 2011 6:29 AM

No. 5 Duke rallied from 16 down to defeat No. 20 North Carolina 79-73 on Wednesday night.

The Blue Devils outscored the Tar Heels 50-30 in the game's second half.

Nolan Smith scored 22 points his career-high 34 points after halftime.

"It wasn't an X-and-O adjustment. ... They were too excited," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "''Nuts' is the word. 'What are you guys doing?' It's not like, 'You know, you guys aren't playing hard.' They're playing hard. ... When you go like that, you're not coordinated, and it was more to get a coordinated effort on the offensive and defensive ends."

Austin Rivers Takes Subtle Shot At North Carolina

Feb 4, 2011 5:15 PM

Austin Rivers, who has signed on to play for Duke, took a shot at rival North Carolina in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel.

Rivers was asked by the Sentinel about the rivalry between the two teams.

"I don't think it's much of a rivalry right now because UNC's not better than Duke, nowhere near in my opinion," Rivers said with a smile. "Until UNC can start winning some games, I don't think it's much of a rivalry. They've got to do something first. Duke's done their share. I don't know about UNC."

Duke swept North Carolina last season, but the Tar Heels took the series against the Blue Devils in 2009 en route to a National Championship.

Larry Drew II Surprisingly Leaves UNC

Feb 4, 2011 11:13 AM

Larry Drew II has left North Carolina's team and will transfer, according to a source close to the situation.

Drew left campus Thursday, roughly 48 hours after recording nine assists in 19 minutes in North Carolina's 106-74 victory over Boston College.

The point guard has shared duties this season with Kendall Marshall, but lost the starting job to the freshman in January.

Drew is the son of Atlanta Hawks head coach Larry Drew.

If Drew transfers to another school, he would have to sit out one season and then have one season of eligibility remaining.

Barnes Scores 26 As North Carolina Thumps Boston College

Feb 2, 2011 7:10 AM

Harrison Barnes scored 26 points as North Carolina dominated Boston College 106-74 on Tuesday night.

Reggie Bullock hit four three-pointers in a 2 1/2-minute span to help lead the Tar Heels.

"The biggest difference for me in the game was Reggie Bullock off the bench," coach Roy Williams said. "We were down five points and then Reggie hits four 3s. The last game, [he] didn't make a field goal. I talked to him after the game and said, 'You probably won't do that again.' "

Joe Trapani had a season-high 25 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for Boston College.
